ATMMTP Financial Need Scholarship

Note: Applications must be made during initial enrollment, and awards are made during the 1st Module.

We are very pleased to offer a single scholarship for one student in each cohort. Please note that only Texas residents who meet income guidelines are eligible to apply, and that the application must be made during the enrollment process. The scholarship is for 50% of the program tuition, beginning with the 2nd Module (i.e. the 1st Module must be paid for in full).

You will be responsible for the remaining 50% of the tuition, payable in installments, each due before the start of each module. You will also be responsible for all other fees, and for maintaining a current Student Membership.

Other expenses you will need to consider are required textbooks, which will cost approximately $900- $1200; travel and lodging for workshop attendance; child care (if applicable); gasoline and car maintenance; cell phone; meals during time spent in clinical training, and equipment; expect a minimum of $500 for basic items such as a thermometer, fetoscope, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, etc. Please also review the computer and software requirements for participating in the program.

Prospective students will be eligible for applying for the scholarships once they have completed the preliminary application for enrollment. Selected candidates will be required to provide proof of income (tax return, check stubs), education (diplomas, transcripts), letters of reference, and possibly proof of expenses. Please follow the instructions very closely to submit your scholarship application correctly.

Scholarship recipients will be held to the highest standards of academic work. This includes no failing grades, no late work, and completion of the academic portion of the Midwifery Training Program in the prescribed program timeline. This means that all workshops must be attended per schedule, unless approval is given in advance by the Program Director. If this does not occur, then the remainder of the scholarship will be revoked.

Income Guidelines for Scholarship Applicants

A scholarship applicant must have a gross family income that does not exceed 185% of the federal income guidelines. This corresponds with WIC income guidelines for reduced price meals. Applicants with an income above these guidelines will not be considered. The below chart may be used to determine eligibility.

January 2023 Income Guidelines for Texas. For pregnant families, the number of household members includes the unborn child(ren). For up-to-date figures or for more than 6 household members, please call your local WIC office.

The Afua Hassan Student of Color Scholarship

Afua Hassan was a champion in providing natural birth options for people of color. Afua practiced at one of the first free-standing birth centers in Texas that were owned and operated by a Black midwife.  Serving the Black community in Houston for over 30 years, Afua dedicated her life to addressing disparities in health care through providing safe, natural birth to Black families, educating new student midwives, and creating community support for her clients.

ATM is committed to Afua’s vision of providing safe care to people of color and addressing the disparities in our health care system. Taking this into account, ATM has developed a scholarship for midwife students of color in the hope of improving access to midwifery care in all communities. The Midwives Memorial Fund

History

The Midwives Memorial Fund was originally established in memory of Paulette Griffin, a committed member of the Association of Texas Midwives Education Committee. Her love for the education of midwives inspired all those who knew her. When she died in 2004, the  ATM Board established this fund in her honor so that her loving and generous spirit would never be forgotten. Over the years, as some of our other sister midwives have passed, the fund was renamed The Midwives Memorial Fund.  Currently enrolled students who have finished at least the first two modules and who are in clinical training may apply for a grant to cover a module's tuition cost.

Purpose

The purpose of the fund is to provide temporary assistance to established ATMMTP students experiencing financial hardship so that the student's education does not need to be postponed. The grant may be approved for the full or partial amount of one module’s tuition. We hope that students will utilize this fund to be able to continue their education and become midwives of the future, midwives that will stand out and shine the way our sister midwives of the past have.

ATMMTP Academic Excellence Scholarship

Note: Students are nominated for this scholarship by their Module 1-4 instructors. Students are eligible for this award regardless of financial need.

The Association of Texas Midwives is committed to the enduring legacy of the profession of Midwifery in Texas. To that end, we are pleased to offer this merit-based scholarship to one student in each cohort, in order that new midwives can be trained and continue the work that was fought for by those who preceded them. This scholarship rewards academic excellence in the pursuit of a Midwifery career.

Upon successful completion of the first 4 modules, students are nominated for this award by their first 4 module instructors. The scholarship is awarded to one student in each cohort during their 5th module and covers 100% of the tuition for all remaining Modules.

Although this probably goes without saying, scholarship recipients will be held to the highest standards of academic work.
